Pork Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Slovene pork market, when its value increased by 38% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Pork consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Pork Production in Slovenia

In value terms, pork production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of pork in Slovenia amounted to X kg per head in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 2.8%. Over the period under review, the average pork yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for pork production in Slovenia; which is down by -2.2% on 2021 figures. Overall, the number of producing animals saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 9.5% against the previous year. The number of animals slaughtered for pork production peaked at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pork decreased by -77.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 242%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, pork exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 172% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Serbia (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of pork exports from Slovenia, with a combined 76% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +216.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Serbia ($X), Croatia ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for pork exported from Slovenia worldwide, together comprising 74% of total exports.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +181.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average pork export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, approx. X tons of pork were imported into Slovenia; declining by -2.7% on 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 9.1% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pork imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Austria (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of pork imports to Slovenia, with a combined 64% share of total imports. Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Croatia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +19.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pork suppliers to Slovenia were Austria ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Hungary, Italy, Croatia, Belgium and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +16.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average pork import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
