Potato Chips Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, the Slovene potato chips market increased by 3.1% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild decline. Potato chips consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for potato chips exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary (X tons), with a 2.1% share of total exports. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Croatia totaled +11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+54.8% per year) and Austria (+16.9% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato chips exports from Slovenia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 0.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Croatia totaled +21.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+84.6% per year) and Italy (-5.3% per year).

The average potato chips export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 64% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, potato chips export price increased by +78.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+19.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of potato chips imported into Slovenia skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 18% compared with the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.3% against 2014 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Italy (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato chips imports to Slovenia, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Austria, Poland, Belgium and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +87.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Croatia ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest potato chips suppliers to Slovenia, together comprising 56% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Croatia, with a CAGR of +63.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato chips import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 6.8% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
