Rye Market Size in Slovenia

For the third year in a row, the Slovene rye market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Rye Production in Slovenia

In value terms, rye production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 51%. Rye production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of rye in Slovenia reached X tons per ha in 2022, rising by 2.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 28%. The rye yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of rye in Slovenia soared to X ha, picking up by 16% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65%. The rye harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of rye, when their volume increased by 215% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,297%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rye exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 878%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for rye exports from Slovenia, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, rye exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Croatia totaled +17.1%.

In value terms, Croatia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for rye exports from Slovenia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Croatia amounted to +16.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average rye export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Rye Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, rye imports into Slovenia soared to X tons, rising by 31% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 173% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 104% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Austria (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of rye imports to Slovenia, together accounting for 81% of total imports. Croatia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Croatia (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest rye suppliers to Slovenia were Austria ($X), Serbia ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports. Croatia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Among the main suppliers, Croatia, with a CAGR of +41.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average rye import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 40% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rye import price increased by +103.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+57.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
