Preserved sardines exports from Slovenia skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, picking up by 74% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 228%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved sardines exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 243%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved sardines exports from Slovenia, together accounting for 68% of total exports. Italy, Malta, Australia and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malta (with a CAGR of +1,126.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for preserved sardines exported from Slovenia were Germany ($X), Croatia ($X) and Austria ($X), with a combined 66% share of total exports. Italy, Australia, Switzerland and Malta lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Malta, with a CAGR of +1,075.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average preserved sardines export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malta ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sardines (prepared or preserved) increased by 15% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved sardines imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Croatia (X tons) constituted the largest preserved sardines supplier to Slovenia, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved sardines imports from Croatia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Morocco (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Croatia totaled +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+1.6% per year) and Germany (+85.1% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sardines (prepared or preserved) to Slovenia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Croatia totaled +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+1.8% per year) and Germany (+84.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average preserved sardines import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
