The average yield of strawberries in Slovenia totaled X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. In 2022, shipments abroad of strawberries increased by 308% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for strawberry exports from Slovenia, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, strawberry exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tons), more than tenfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany stood at +84.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+24.8% per year) and Italy (-3.7% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for strawberries exports from Slovenia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Croatia ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +109.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+27.6% per year) and Italy (-1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average strawberry export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry export price increased by +10.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 30%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

Strawberry imports into Slovenia shrank to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -5.8% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 20%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, strawberry imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of strawberry imports to Slovenia, together comprising 88% of total imports. Greece, Croatia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest strawberry suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 90% share of total imports. Croatia, Greece and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9%.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
