Sugary Soft Drink Market Size in Slovenia

The Slovene sugary soft drink market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +19.8% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Sugary Soft Drink Production in Slovenia

In value terms, sugary soft drink production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 19%. Sugary soft drink production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of sugary soft drinks decreased by -12.7% to X litres in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X litres), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X litres) and Italy (X litres) were the main destinations of sugary soft drink exports from Slovenia, together accounting for 69% of total exports. France, Serbia, Albania, the Czech Republic and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +67.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Croatia ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) were the largest markets for sugary soft drink exported from Slovenia worldwide, together accounting for 69% of total exports. France, Serbia, Albania, Austria and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, France, with a CAGR of +62.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sugary soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, purchases abroad of sugary soft drinks increased by 2.2% to X litres, rising for the seventh year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +96.8% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Croatia (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of sugary soft drink to Slovenia, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, sugary soft drink imports from Croatia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Serbia (X litres), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Croatia totaled +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.3% per year) and Serbia (+46.5% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugary soft drinks to Slovenia, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Croatia amounted to +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+0.7% per year) and Italy (+14.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sugary soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, waning by -7.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for Croatia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
