In 2022, the average yield of sunflower seed in Slovenia rose slightly to X tons per ha, with an increase of 3.3% on the year before. Overall, the yield indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sunflower seed yield decreased by -3.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The sunflower seed yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the sunflower seed harvested area in Slovenia shrank to X ha, dropping by -8.3% against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sunflower seed production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, approx. X tons of sunflower seed were exported from Slovenia; jumping by 39% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 3,881%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sunflower seed exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 908% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of sunflower seed exports from Slovenia, with a combined 79% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +439.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for sunflower seed exported from Slovenia were Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and Croatia ($X), together accounting for 76% of total exports. Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +241.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sunflower seed export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -9.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 287% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, imports of sunflower seed into Slovenia declined significantly to X tons, falling by -20.1% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports faced a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 155%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Bulgaria (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to Slovenia, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, sunflower seed imports from Bulgaria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Bulgaria stood at +8.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-9.1% per year) and Ukraine (+34.5% per year).

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to Slovenia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Bulgaria stood at +10.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-7.1% per year) and Ukraine (+40.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average sunflower seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 34%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
