The Slovene tallow market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, increasing by 8.1% against the previous year. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Tallow production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Slovenia

Tallow exports from Slovenia dropped sharply to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -65.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tallow exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

North Macedonia (X tons) was the main destination for tallow exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, tallow exports to North Macedonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Croatia (X tons), with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to North Macedonia stood at -2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (-14.5% per year) and Croatia (+8.7% per year).

In value terms, North Macedonia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tallow exports from Slovenia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to North Macedonia totaled +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (-6.4% per year) and Croatia (+2.6% per year).

The average tallow export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of tallow decreased by -9.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 1,571% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, tallow imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,753% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Romania (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of tallow imports to Slovenia, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +207.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tallow suppliers to Slovenia were Romania ($X), Italy ($X) and Austria ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +195.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average tallow import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 264%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+38.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
