Asphalted Paper Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, the Slovene asphalted paper market increased by 19% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. Asphalted paper consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, when their volume decreased by -40% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Denmark (X tons) was the main destination for asphalted paper exports from Slovenia, with a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, asphalted paper exports to Denmark exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Denmark totaled -13.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (-17.6% per year) and Hungary (+13.1% per year).

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the key foreign market for tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard exports from Slovenia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Croatia ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Denmark amounted to -12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (-14.5% per year) and Hungary (+10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asphalted paper export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+32.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

Asphalted paper imports into Slovenia declined to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -10% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest asphalted paper supplier to Slovenia, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, asphalted paper imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Croatia (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to -10.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Croatia (+20.1% per year) and Italy (-14.1% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Croatia ($X) appeared to be the largest asphalted paper suppliers to Slovenia, together comprising 100% of total imports.

Croatia, with a CAGR of +5.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asphalted paper import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asphalted paper import price increased by +58.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+34.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
