In 2022, wine of fresh grapes exports from Slovenia amounted to X litres, picking up by 2.2% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +13.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +74.4% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Italy (X litres), the United States (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main destinations of wine of fresh grapes exports from Slovenia, with a combined 53% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Croatia, Japan, Germany, the UK, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, China, Serbia and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest markets for wine of fresh grapes exported from Slovenia worldwide, together comprising 49% of total exports. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wine of fresh grapes export price increased by +102.4% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

After five years of decline, overseas purchases of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) increased by 4.8% to X litres in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +42.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, North Macedonia (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of wine of fresh grapes to Slovenia, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes imports from North Macedonia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X litres), threefold. Hungary (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from North Macedonia amounted to +10.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-9.1% per year) and Hungary (+9.0% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X), North Macedonia ($X) and France ($X) were the largest wine of fresh grapes suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 68% share of total imports. Spain, Hungary, Croatia, Germany and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wine of fresh grapes import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wine of fresh grapes import price increased by +33.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
