In 2021, the South African agricultural appliance market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a significant contraction. Agricultural appliance consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of agricultural appliances was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, agricultural appliance exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
New Zealand (X units) was the main destination for agricultural appliance exports from South Africa, with a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, agricultural appliance exports to New Zealand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mozambique (X units), twofold. Malawi (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to New Zealand amounted to +84.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (+6.3% per year) and Malawi (+7.1% per year).
In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) remains the key foreign market for agricultural appliances exports from South Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Zimbabwe stood at +19.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (-2.4% per year) and Mozambique (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average agricultural appliance export price amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -31.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+29.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
For the ninth consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in supplies from abroad of agricultural appliances, which decreased by -22.6% to X units in 2021. In general, imports faced a dramatic decrease. The smallest decline of -2.5% was in 2014. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, agricultural appliance imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X units) constituted the largest supplier of agricultural appliance to South Africa, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, agricultural appliance imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X units), fourfold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at -34.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-29.6% per year) and China (-39.6% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), the United States ($X) and Mexico ($X) constituted the largest agricultural appliance suppliers to South Africa, together comprising 55% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, China, Italy, India and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 26%.
In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +25.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average agricultural appliance import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+62.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
