Ammonia Market Size in South Africa

In 2022, the South African ammonia market increased by 0.1% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable descent. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+7.1%).

Imports into South Africa

Ammonia imports into South Africa amounted to X tons in 2022, growing by 2.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ammonia imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 247% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Brazil (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main suppliers of ammonia imports to South Africa, together accounting for 57% of total imports. China, Algeria, Trinidad and Tobago and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +206,460.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
