The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 353% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Namibia (X tons) was the main destination for ammonia exports from South Africa, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, ammonia exports to Namibia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zimbabwe (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Namibia stood at +40.7%.
In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the largest markets for ammonia exported from South Africa worldwide.

In 2022, the average ammonia export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 29%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+7.1%).

Imports into South Africa
Ammonia imports into South Africa amounted to X tons in 2022, growing by 2.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ammonia imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 247% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main suppliers of ammonia imports to South Africa, together accounting for 57% of total imports. China, Algeria, Trinidad and Tobago and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +206,460.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the largest ammonia suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 61% share of total imports. China, Algeria, Libya and Trinidad and Tobago lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
China, with a CAGR of +178,325.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average ammonia import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 145%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the price for Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+65.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
