There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Seychelles (+86.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved anchovies imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Morocco (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved anchovies imports to South Africa, with a combined 92% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China and Peru, which together accounted for a further 7.9%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +71.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constituted the largest supplier of anchovies (prepared or preserved) to South Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 14% share.
