In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the South African table-tennis equipment market, when its value decreased by -40.1% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of articles and equipment for table-tennis increased by 4.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 360% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, table-tennis equipment exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 194%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Namibia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main destinations of table-tennis equipment exports from South Africa, with a combined 45% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa

Table-tennis equipment imports into South Africa dropped sharply to X tons in 2022, which is down by -38.3% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 90%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, table-tennis equipment imports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 44%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main table-tennis equipment supplier to South Africa, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, table-tennis equipment imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+25.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-66.0% per year).

From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
