Exports by Country
Zimbabwe (X tons) was the main destination for twine product exports from South Africa, with a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, twine product exports to Zimbabwe exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lesotho (X tons), twofold. Mozambique (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of articles of twine, cordage, rope or cables decreased by -23.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, twine product imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the main twine product supplier to South Africa, with a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, twine product imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+10.9% per year) and Germany (-11.1% per year).
