In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations, when their volume increased by 37% to X tons. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -8.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Zambia (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of artificial and colloidal graphite exports from South Africa, with a combined 55% share of total exports. Zimbabwe, South Korea, Turkey, Georgia, the United States, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +381.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for artificial and colloidal graphite exported from South Africa were Zambia ($X), Australia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 53% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, Georgia, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the UK, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +392.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average artificial and colloidal graphite export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -12.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+47.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Artificial Graphite, Colloidal, Semi-Colloidal Graphite and Preparations
Imports into South Africa
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations increased by 3.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
France (X tons), China (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of artificial and colloidal graphite imports to South Africa, together comprising 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, Germany, Spain, India and Japan, which together accounted for a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest artificial and colloidal graphite suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Germany, India, Japan and Spain, which together accounted for a further 23%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average artificial and colloidal graphite import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+20.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
