The South African bearing market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a slight reduction. Bearing consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, bearing exports from South Africa soared to X tons, rising by 43% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 44%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bearing exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the main destinations of bearing exports from South Africa, together comprising 0.8% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Swaziland, Brazil, the United States, Malawi, Tanzania, Argentina and China, which together accounted for a further 0.9%.

From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average bearing export price stood at $X per ton in 2020, rising by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight decline. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2020, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Zambia ($X per ton) and Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($X per ton) and Botswana ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (-6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of ball and roller bearings was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Germany, India, Italy, Sweden, Thailand, France, the UK, Hong Kong SAR, Romania and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 0.3%.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +50.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest bearing suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 61% share of total imports. In 2020, the average bearing import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
