The South African bicycle market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced reduction. Bicycle consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, approx. X units of bicycles and other cycles were exported from South Africa; rising by 32% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bicycle exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a slight decline. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Malawi (X units), Namibia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) were the main destinations of bicycle exports from South Africa, with a combined 57% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of bicycles and other cycles, when their volume increased by 48% to X units. Overall, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 63%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
