The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, electric board, desk and panel exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 98%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The UK (X units) was the main destination for electric board, desk and panel exports from South Africa, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, electric board, desk and panel exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Namibia (X units), fivefold. Mozambique (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK amounted to +197.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+22.0% per year) and Mozambique (+15.0% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets exports from South Africa, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK stood at +136.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+23.6% per year) and Mozambique (+6.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, electric board, desk and panel imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of electric board, desk and panel to South Africa, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, electric board, desk and panel imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X units), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X units), with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+22.1% per year) and India (+11.2% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets to South Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +15.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+26.8% per year) and Italy (+2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 47% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Sri Lanka ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
