In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), Zambia ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for calcium carbonate exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 65% share of total exports.
Ghana, with a CAGR of +54.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, calcium carbonate imports into South Africa expanded to X tons, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest calcium carbonate supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, calcium carbonate imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Jordan (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Egypt stood at +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+27.9% per year) and Jordan (+6.9% per year).
In value terms, Egypt ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and China ($X) were the largest calcium carbonate suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 52% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Vietnam, Jordan, Spain, Malaysia and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 33%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Zambia, with a CAGR of +68.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average calcium carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 22%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
