Cheese Market Size in South Africa

In 2021, the South African cheese market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, exports of cheese from South Africa rose markedly to X tons, increasing by 9.3% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cheese exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from South Africa, together comprising 51% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Saudi Arabia and Lesotho, which together accounted for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cheese exported from South Africa were Namibia ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Saudi Arabia and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

In 2021, the average cheese export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 40% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cheese imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 22%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

New Zealand (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to South Africa, together comprising 62% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for New Zealand (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest cheese suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 57% share of total imports.
