Botswana (X tons) was the main destination for coconut exports from South Africa, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, coconut exports to Botswana exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Namibia (X tons), sevenfold. Mozambique (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Botswana was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-8.0% per year) and Mozambique (-12.0% per year).
In value terms, Botswana ($X) remains the key foreign market for coconuts exports from South Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Botswana stood at +3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-4.0% per year) and Mozambique (-16.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average coconut export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -39.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 98%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
Coconut imports into South Africa soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 36% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 182%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coconut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 160% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) constituted the largest coconut supplier to South Africa, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, coconut imports from Mozambique exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Mozambique stood at +18.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-12.7% per year) and India (-29.9% per year).
In value terms, Mozambique ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coconuts to South Africa, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Mozambique amounted to +14.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-12.3% per year) and India (-23.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average coconut import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 53%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
