Coffee Extract Market Size in South Africa
The South African coffee extract market fell to $X in 2021, waning by -6.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Coffee Extract Production in South Africa
In value terms, coffee extract production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports from South Africa
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -29.6% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, coffee extract exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 106%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) were the main destinations of coffee extract exports from South Africa, with a combined 49% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +22.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Namibia ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Mauritius ($X) were the largest markets for coffee extract exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 44% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +14.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coffee Extract Imports
Imports into South Africa
For the fifth consecutive year, South Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, which increased by 4.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, coffee extract imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Korea (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee extract imports to South Africa, together comprising 58% of total imports. The Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Malaysia and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +48.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest coffee extract suppliers to South Africa were Germany ($X), South Korea ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 54% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Poland, Brazil and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 36%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +36.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average coffee extract import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 3.9%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
