Green Coffee Market Size in South Africa
The South African green coffee market rose modestly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. Green coffee consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from South Africa
In 2022, the amount of coffee (green) exported from South Africa fell notably to X tons, with a decrease of -28.1% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 253%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, green coffee exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Namibia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main destinations of green coffee exports from South Africa, with a combined 62% share of total exports. Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, the United States, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Namibia ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the largest markets for green coffee exported from South Africa worldwide, together comprising 68% of total exports. Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, the United States, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, with a CAGR of +24.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average green coffee export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 298%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -18.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, green coffee imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of green coffee to South Africa, accounting for a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, green coffee imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uganda (X tons), with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam stood at -5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+9.1% per year) and Uganda (+6.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest green coffee suppliers to South Africa were Brazil ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together comprising 46% of total imports. Ethiopia, Uganda, Guatemala, Indonesia, Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Rwanda and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +22.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average green coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 64% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green coffee import price increased by +76.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
