Botswana (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the main destinations of computing machinery exports from South Africa, together comprising 41% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, the UK, Swaziland, Tanzania, Germany and Lesotho, which together accounted for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +57.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for computing machinery exported from South Africa were Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 26% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Hong Kong SAR, Swaziland, Germany, Malaysia, Lesotho, Tanzania and the UK, which together accounted for a further 28%.
Among the main countries of destination, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +37.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average computing machinery export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 39%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 53%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, computing machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of computing machinery imports to South Africa, with a combined 72% share of total imports. The Philippines, Italy, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, Poland, Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +34.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof to South Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-2.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.6% per year).

In 2021, the average computing machinery import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 6,860% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
