Belgium (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Angola (X units) were the main destinations of transport container exports from South Africa, together comprising 56% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UK, Mozambique, Ghana, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, France, Swaziland and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +43.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
Transport container imports into South Africa contracted sharply to X units in 2022, with a decrease of -17.8% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, transport container imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

China (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units) were the main suppliers of transport container imports to South Africa, together comprising 53% of total imports. The United States, British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Bermuda, France, Taiwan (Chinese), the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bermuda (with a CAGR of +42.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the largest transport container suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 52% share of total imports. The United States, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Taiwan (Chinese), the UK, France, Barbados, the United Arab Emirates, Finland and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Finland, with a CAGR of +60.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average transport container import price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 153%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the price for Barbados ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
