Exports from South Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) were exported from South Africa; declining by -5.3% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) were the main destinations of paper and paperboard exports from South Africa, together accounting for 68% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Uganda and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +96.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X) were the largest markets for paper and paperboard exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 65% share of total exports. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Lesotho and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Among the main countries of destination, Uganda, with a CAGR of +72.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.5% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard export price increased by +27.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 32%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) were imported into South Africa; with an increase of 59% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of paper and paperboard imports to South Africa, together accounting for 61% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +316.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) to South Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+276.4% per year) and Switzerland (+32.8% per year).

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+16.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
