Australia (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the main destinations of modified starches exports from South Africa, together accounting for 77% of total exports.

Modified starches imports into South Africa soared to X tons in 2022, growing by 28% compared with 2021. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, modified starches imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. Thailand (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of modified starches imports to South Africa, together accounting for 64% of total imports. Brazil, the Netherlands, Austria, Vietnam and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +22.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
