In 2021, shipments abroad of power tools increased by 36% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 381% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, power tool exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Namibia (X units), Botswana (X units) and Zambia (X units) were the main destinations of power tool exports from South Africa, with a combined 44% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, the Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Germany and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +58.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for power tool exported from South Africa were Namibia ($X), Botswana ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Swaziland, Germany, Kenya and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Germany, with a CAGR of +33.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average power tool export price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -10% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 197% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of power tools increased by 80% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 124%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, power tool imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) was the main supplier of power tool to South Africa, with a 92% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia (X units), with a 2.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+5.4% per year) and Germany (-3.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of power tools to South Africa, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.
