Zimbabwe (X units) was the main destination for internal combustion engine equipment exports from South Africa, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, internal combustion engine equipment exports to Zimbabwe exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Swaziland (X units), sixfold. Botswana (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.

Germany, with a CAGR of +91.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average internal combustion engine equipment export price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -23.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+26.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of equipment for internal combustion engines increased by 21% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, internal combustion engine equipment imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

China (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) and Japan (X units) were the main suppliers of internal combustion engine equipment imports to South Africa, together accounting for 79% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
