Australia (X tons) was the main destination for fish meals and pellet exports from South Africa, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, fish meals and pellet exports to Australia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), sixfold.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish decreased by -23.9% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 649% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 585%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Uganda (X tons) was the main fish meals and pellet supplier to South Africa, with a 96% share of total imports. Moreover, fish meals and pellet imports from Uganda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Namibia (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uganda was relatively modest.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of flours, meals and pellets of fish to South Africa, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uganda was relatively modest.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fish meals and pellet import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 52%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the price for Uganda totaled $X per ton.
