Mozambique (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the main destinations of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from South Africa, with a combined 55% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Namibia ($X) and Zambia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from South Africa worldwide, together accounting for 51% of total exports.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +8.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Imports into South Africa
After six years of decline, supplies from abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 369% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 444% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Swaziland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports to South Africa, together accounting for 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Chile, Uganda, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United States and India, which together accounted for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +223.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Chile ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines to South Africa, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Chile amounted to -7.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+74.0% per year) and Switzerland (+74.2% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 140%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
