In 2021, the South African frozen potato market increased by 2.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +8.2% against 2019 indices. Frozen potato consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen potato production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +2.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen potatoes decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 10%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, frozen potato exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Botswana (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the main destinations of frozen potato exports from South Africa, together comprising 79% of total exports. These countries were followed by Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, which together accounted for a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +26.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for frozen potato exported from South Africa were Botswana ($X), Zambia ($X) and Namibia ($X), together comprising 76% of total exports. Swaziland, Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
Among the main countries of destination, Malawi, with a CAGR of +28.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average frozen potato export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of frozen potatoes, when their volume increased by 79% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of frozen potato to South Africa, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen potato imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-1.1% per year) and Germany (+59.5% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of frozen potatoes to South Africa, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-4.9% per year) and Germany (+54.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average frozen potato import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+23.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
