In 2022, the South African fruit flour market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption saw mild growth. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fruit flour exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 194% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Zimbabwe (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of fruit flour exports from South Africa, together comprising 83% of total exports. Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +125.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for fruit flour exported from South Africa were the United States ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together comprising 88% of total exports. Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.4%.
Among the main countries of destination, Botswana, with a CAGR of +103.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average fruit flour export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -46.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 72%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, fruit flour imports into South Africa shrank rapidly to X tons, with a decrease of -21.4% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 118%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fruit flour imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fruit flour to South Africa, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, fruit flour imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain totaled +50.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+77.3% per year) and the United States (-2.2% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fruit flour to South Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +51.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-0.7% per year) and the United States (+1.6% per year).

The average fruit flour import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 146% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
