The South African plastic furniture market totaled $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic furniture exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 17%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Namibia (X units), Botswana (X units) and Mozambique (X units) were the main destinations of plastic furniture exports from South Africa, together comprising 66% of total exports. Lesotho, Zambia, Swaziland, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +34.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for plastic furniture exported from South Africa worldwide, together accounting for 52% of total exports. Lesotho, Zambia, Swaziland, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +10.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average plastic furniture export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 14%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of furniture of plastic increased by 25% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic furniture imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of plastic furniture to South Africa, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic furniture imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Israel (X units), with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+59.9% per year) and Israel (-2.2% per year).
