Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 310% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Botswana (X units) was the main destination for exports of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments from South Africa, accounting for a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments to Botswana exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lesotho (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mozambique (X units), with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Botswana totaled +15.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lesotho (+5.7% per year) and Mozambique (+29.1% per year).

Zambia, with a CAGR of +27.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for non-woven, felt and coated textile garments stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -36.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments decreased by -18.9% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 151% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 153% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest non-woven, felt and coated textile garment supplier to South Africa, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X units), with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+17.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-woven, felt and coated textile garments to South Africa, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+29.1% per year) and Cambodia (+15.7% per year).

The average import price for non-woven, felt and coated textile garments stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 70% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
