The South African gin and geneva market soared to $X in 2022, surging by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, gin and geneva exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Namibia (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres) and China (X litres) were the main destinations of gin and geneva exports from South Africa, with a combined 43% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +111.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Swaziland ($X) constituted the largest markets for gin and geneva exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Zimbabwe, China, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zambia, Ghana and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In general, export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, gin and geneva export price increased by +11.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, gin and geneva imports into South Africa amounted to X litres, picking up by 8.3% on the year before. Overall, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 131% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gin and geneva imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 143% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the UK (X litres) constituted the largest gin and geneva supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, gin and geneva imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X litres), more than tenfold. Italy (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK stood at +27.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+73.1% per year) and Italy (+58.0% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of gin and geneva to South Africa, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK stood at +21.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+45.3% per year) and France (+52.8% per year).

The average gin and geneva import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, reducing by -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a deep contraction. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the price for France ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
