Zimbabwe (X tons) was the main destination for flat glass exports from South Africa, accounting for a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, flat glass exports to Zimbabwe exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mozambique (X tons), twofold. Botswana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) remains the key foreign market for flat glass exports from South Africa, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Zimbabwe totaled +4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+5.2% per year) and Mozambique (+5.9% per year).

In value terms, flat glass imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -28.7% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of flat glass imports to South Africa, together comprising 47% of total imports. India, Thailand, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +63.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest flat glass suppliers to South Africa were China ($X), Germany ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 47% of total imports. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 8.1%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
