Non-Wheat Groats Market Size in South Africa
In 2021, the South African non-wheat groats market increased by 29% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Non-wheat groats consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) decreased by -28.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, non-wheat groats exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +110.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 66%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Lesotho (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Angola (X tons) were the main destinations of non-wheat groats exports from South Africa, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +30.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for non-wheat groats exported from South Africa were Mozambique ($X), Lesotho ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), together comprising 76% of total exports.
Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +29.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average non-wheat groats export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Botswana ($X per ton) and Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Angola ($X per ton) and Lesotho ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (-1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into South Africa
For the fourth consecutive year, South Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), which increased by 6.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 60% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-wheat groats imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 67%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Botswana (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-wheat groats imports to South Africa, with a combined 95% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +121.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest non-wheat groats suppliers to South Africa were the UK ($X), Botswana ($X) and Lesotho ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports.
Botswana, with a CAGR of +96.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average non-wheat groats import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
