Zambia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main destinations of animal guts exports from South Africa, together comprising 55% of total exports. Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +41.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Zambia ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X) were the largest markets for animal guts exported from South Africa worldwide, together comprising 63% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Egypt and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Lesotho, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average animal guts export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of guts, bladders and stomachs of animals were imported into South Africa; which is down by -16.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 44%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, animal guts imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of animal guts to South Africa, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, animal guts imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Argentina (X tons), with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil amounted to +12.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+4.3% per year) and Argentina (+22.2% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of guts, bladders and stomachs of animals to South Africa, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+13.2% per year) and Germany (+0.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average animal guts import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
