After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of headphones decreased by -18.9% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, headphone exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. Namibia (X units) was the main destination for headphone exports from South Africa, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, headphone exports to Namibia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Botswana (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lesotho (X units), with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Namibia amounted to +19.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+17.3% per year) and Lesotho (+27.0% per year).

Angola, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average headphone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, purchases abroad of headphones increased by 45% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, headphone imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 44%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X units) was the main supplier of headphone to South Africa, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam (X units), with a 1.9% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +16.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+66.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-32.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of headphones to South Africa, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 0.3% share.
