In 2022, overseas shipments of heat exchange units increased by 5.9% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 556% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, heat exchange unit exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 81%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zambia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) were the main destinations of heat exchange unit exports from South Africa, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, Namibia, the United States, Madagascar, Botswana, Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Australia and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Zambia ($X) and Mozambique ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for heat exchange unit exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Zimbabwe, Namibia, the United States, Madagascar, Botswana, Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Australia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

Madagascar, with a CAGR of +73.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average heat exchange unit export price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 446% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) and Madagascar ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per unit) and Mozambique ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+50.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Heat exchange unit imports into South Africa reduced markedly to X units in 2022, dropping by -26.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, heat exchange unit imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 80%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the United States (X units) constituted the largest heat exchange unit supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 24% share of total imports. Moreover, heat exchange unit imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), twofold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at -11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.3% per year) and Germany (-15.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of heat exchange units to South Africa, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States stood at +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+10.4% per year) and Germany (-6.0% per year).

The average heat exchange unit import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 72%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from India ($X per unit) and the United States ($X per unit), while the price for the UK ($X per unit) and Thailand ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
