In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +23.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Zambia (X tons) was the main destination for iodine, fluorine and bromine exports from South Africa, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports to Zambia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X tons), twofold. Botswana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Zambia amounted to +19.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+18.2% per year) and Botswana (+49.0% per year).
In value terms, Zambia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for iodine, fluorine and bromine exports from South Africa, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Zambia amounted to +24.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (+2.3% per year) and Botswana (+39.7% per year).

The average iodine, fluorine and bromine export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+21.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of iodine, fluorine and bromine were imported into South Africa; increasing by 12% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. Chile (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main suppliers of iodine, fluorine and bromine imports to South Africa, with a combined 90% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, the United States and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +280.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
