From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted buoyant growth. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for jam, jelly, puree and paste exports from South Africa, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Japan (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia totaled +17.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+3.4% per year) and Japan (+161.5% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for jams, jellies, puree and pastes exports from South Africa, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia totaled +13.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+144.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+6.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for jams, jellies, puree and pastes amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes
Imports into South Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of jams, jellies, puree and pastes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Swaziland (X tons) constituted the largest jam, jelly, puree and paste supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports from Swaziland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Colombia (X tons), sevenfold. Costa Rica (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Swaziland stood at +43.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+17.4% per year) and Costa Rica (+702.5% per year).
In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of jams, jellies, puree and pastes to South Africa, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 5.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Swaziland stood at +50.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+0.5% per year) and Colombia (+31.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for jams, jellies, puree and pastes amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 51%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
