Imports into South Africa
In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes, when their volume increased by 36% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 217% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 171% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Swaziland (X tons) constituted the largest fruit or nut preserves supplier to South Africa, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, fruit or nut preserves imports from Swaziland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Colombia (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Costa Rica (X tons), with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Swaziland stood at +48.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+17.4% per year) and Costa Rica (+702.5% per year).
In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes to South Africa, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Swaziland totaled +53.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+31.7% per year) and France (-0.1% per year).
