Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactam exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 132%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Zimbabwe (X kg) was the main destination for lactam exports from South Africa, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, lactam exports to Zimbabwe exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mozambique (X kg), fourfold. Swaziland (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Zimbabwe totaled -49.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (-43.5% per year) and Swaziland (+5.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for lactam exported from South Africa were Zimbabwe ($X), Namibia ($X) and Swaziland ($X), together accounting for 92% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Swaziland, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average lactam export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 56% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 168%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+90.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, the amount of lactams from heterocyclic compounds imported into South Africa contracted to X tons, dropping by -14.2% against the year before. Overall, imports saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactam imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 142% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactam imports to South Africa, together accounting for 69% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +29.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lactams from heterocyclic compounds to South Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.7% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
