In 2021, the South African liquid supply meter market decreased by -0.4% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, liquid supply meter exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Botswana (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Swaziland (X units) were the main destinations of liquid supply meter exports from South Africa, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Tanzania, Namibia, Lesotho, Kenya, Zambia and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +58.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the key foreign market for liquid supply or production meters exports from South Africa, comprising 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with an 8.4% share.

Imports into South Africa

After four years of decline, purchases abroad of liquid supply or production meters increased by 20% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, liquid supply meter imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of liquid supply meter to South Africa, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, liquid supply meter imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), fivefold.
