In 2021, the South African liquid supply meter market decreased by -0.4% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, liquid supply meter exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Botswana (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Swaziland (X units) were the main destinations of liquid supply meter exports from South Africa, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Tanzania, Namibia, Lesotho, Kenya, Zambia and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +58.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the key foreign market for liquid supply or production meters exports from South Africa, comprising 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Namibia amounted to +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (-1.4% per year) and Botswana (-20.7% per year).

The average liquid supply meter export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -28.4% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+29.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Liquid Supply Meter Imports
Imports into South Africa
After four years of decline, purchases abroad of liquid supply or production meters increased by 20% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, liquid supply meter imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of liquid supply meter to South Africa, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, liquid supply meter imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X units), with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-9.2% per year) and Germany (-21.4% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), China ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest liquid supply meter suppliers to South Africa, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Slovakia, the United States, Denmark and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Denmark, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average liquid supply meter import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
