Malt Market Size in South Africa
The South African malt market stood at $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Exports from South Africa
In 2022, the amount of malt exported from South Africa expanded to X tons, picking up by 2% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 145% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, malt exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Botswana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main destinations of malt exports from South Africa, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Swaziland, Namibia, Zambia and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Lesotho ($X) were the largest markets for malt exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 72% share of total exports. Swaziland, Namibia, Uruguay and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Swaziland, with a CAGR of +34.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2022, imports of malt into South Africa totaled X tons, standing approx. at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest malt supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+12.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+61.4% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to South Africa, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium amounted to +4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+14.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+52.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average malt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 18%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+58.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
