Malt Market Size in South Africa

The South African malt market stood at $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, malt imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest malt supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+12.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+61.4% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to South Africa, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 15% share.
