Manuka Market Size in South Africa

In 2022, the South African manuka market decreased by -53.6% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manuka production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.1% against 2020 indices. In 2022, overseas shipments of manuka decreased by -39.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, manuka exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 62%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main destinations of manuka exports from South Africa, with a combined 78% share of total exports. Swaziland, Mozambique, Malawi and Sri Lanka lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for manuka exported from South Africa were Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Lesotho ($X), together comprising 78% of total exports. Swaziland, Mozambique, Malawi and Sri Lanka lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In 2022, the average manuka export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.5% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, manuka export price increased by +30.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 34%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa

After seven years of growth, supplies from abroad of manuka decreased by -60.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, manuka imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 36%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to South Africa, with a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, manuka imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Zambia (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+26.6% per year) and India (+122.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to South Africa, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
