Mattress Market Size in South Africa

The South African mattress market declined modestly to $X in 2022, falling by -1.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Namibia (X units), Lesotho (X units) and Botswana (X units) were the main destinations of mattress exports from South Africa, together accounting for 68% of total exports. Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +30.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
